A trailer bill of sale records the private sale of a trailer: who sold it, who bought it, the VIN, the price and that it is sold as-is. Many small trailers have no title, so the bill of sale may be the main proof of the sale.

What else you need

  • Title or not? States title trailers differently, and many skip titles for light trailers. Where there is a title, the signed title transfers ownership; where there is none, keep this bill of sale with the registration.
  • No VIN? Homemade trailers may need an inspection and an assigned number before they can be registered. Ask your DMV.
  • Plates usually stay with the seller.

For cars, see the state vehicle bill of sale pages, which link the title rules for each state.
