How Our Free Legal Templates Work

How they’re written

Each template is drafted in plain English from common provisions used across US states, then checked against widely used statutory forms and state guidance where they exist. We favor short, clear clauses over legalese, because a document both sides understand is less likely to end in a dispute.

How the builder works

  1. You type your details into the form.
  2. The document fills in instantly in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to our server or stored.
  3. Blanks you leave empty stay as lines you can fill in by hand.
  4. Print (or save as PDF) or download a Word-compatible .doc file you can edit further.

Making it valid

  • Read the “Before you sign” notes on each document: who signs, and whether witnesses or a notary are needed.
  • Follow our guides on signing and notarizing.
  • Check your state’s rules: deposit limits, notice periods and signing formalities vary.

Keeping them current

We review templates regularly and update them when common practice or laws change. Each page shows when it was last updated.

Limits

Templates can’t account for every situation. If the stakes are high or your situation is unusual, have a lawyer review your document: our partner site offers a free case review.
