How it works
This is a parental delegation, not a court-appointed guardianship. Many states have a statutory form (sometimes a “power of attorney for a minor”) and limit how long it can last, often six months to a year. Check your state’s rules and use its form if one exists.
When you need a court instead
For long-term care, when parents can’t consent, or when there’s a dispute, a court guardianship is usually required. Talk to a child custody lawyer.
Tips
- Give the caregiver copies of insurance cards and medical information.
- Notify the school and pediatrician.
- For travel abroad, also use a child travel consent form.
Frequently asked questions
Does temporary guardianship need to go through court?
Not for a short-term parental authorization like this one; court guardianship is needed for longer or contested situations.
How long can temporary guardianship last?
It depends on your state: many cap parental delegations at around six months, sometimes renewable.
