North Dakota rules to know

  • Seller signs and dates the title, with the buyer’s name, price and date, and delivers it within 15 days.
  • Odometer for vehicles under ten years old; damage disclosure (SFN 18609) for vehicles under nine years old.
  • Seller removes the plates.

What else you need

The certificate of title is what legally transfers ownership in most cases. Federal rules require an odometer disclosure at every transfer for model year 2011 and newer vehicles, for their first 20 years. If North Dakota has its own bill of sale form, you can use it alongside this one.

Tips for sellers

  • Keep a signed copy of this bill of sale and a photo of the signed title.
  • Notify your insurer once the car is gone.
  • Accept payment you can verify (cash or a cashier’s check confirmed with the bank).

Do you need a bill of sale in North Dakota?

Not as a required step. A dated bill of sale is one form of proof the buyer can carry while driving the car home.

The seller must deliver the endorsed title within 15 days. The buyer can drive 5 days on dated proof of ownership, or 30 days on a self-issued temporary permit while titling.

Does a bill of sale need to be notarized in North Dakota?

The North Dakota page we checked does not require notarizing a bill of sale. Follow any notary lines printed on the title itself.
