Utah rules to know
- Seller: title within 48 hours, plus the registration and emissions certificate if needed.
- Remove your plates unless they are sold with the car, and report the sale to the DMV.
- Odometer statement (TC-891) unless the vehicle is 20 or more years old.
- Bill of sale sets the price for sales tax.
What else you need
The certificate of title is what legally transfers ownership in most cases. Federal rules require an odometer disclosure at every transfer for model year 2011 and newer vehicles, for their first 20 years. If Utah has its own bill of sale form, you can use it alongside this one.
Tips for sellers
- Keep a signed copy of this bill of sale and a photo of the signed title.
- Notify your insurer once the car is gone.
- Accept payment you can verify (cash or a cashier’s check confirmed with the bank).

Frequently asked questions
Do you need a bill of sale in Utah?
Not required, but it matters for tax: with a bill of sale, sales tax is based on the price you paid; without one, the DMV uses fair market value. Utah’s own form is TC-843.
How long do you have to transfer a title in Utah?
The seller must provide the title within 48 hours of the sale.
Does a bill of sale need to be notarized in Utah?
The Utah DMV says no notary is needed to sign off on a title.
Is a bill of sale the same as a title?
No. The title transfers legal ownership; the bill of sale records the transaction.
