Georgia rules to know
- Buyer: title and register within 7 days. Georgia DOR: “Title and registration must be completed within 7 days of purchase date,” at your County Tag Office.
- Bring: your Georgia license or ID, the original title assigned to you with liens released and the assignment signed by buyer and seller, Form MV-1 Title/Tag Application, proof of insurance, an emission certificate if applicable, and payment.
- Fees: a $20 plate fee, an $18 title fee and Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT), plus any penalties.
- Bill of sale: Georgia DOR asks for a bill of sale when the vehicle is 1985 or older and does not require a title. For newer vehicles the title transfers ownership, and this bill of sale is your record of the price and date.
What else you need
The certificate of title is what legally transfers ownership. Most states also require an odometer disclosure on the title for newer vehicles, and some require a state-specific bill of sale form or notarization. Check your DMV’s website.
Tips for sellers
- Remove your license plates if your state requires it.
- Notify the DMV and your insurer that you sold the car.
- Accept payment you can verify (cash or a cashier’s check confirmed with the bank).
